One Choice Can Transform You

“One Choice
One Choice, decided your friends.
One Choice, defines your beliefs.
One Choice, determines your loyalties – Forever.
ONCE CHOICE CAN TRANSFORM YOU”

The first novel from the Divergent series is the first novel for Veronica Roth, the author. Veronica wrote this novel when she was in the final grade of college and succeeded in publishing "Divergent" at a relatively young age of 22 years. In an interview, Veronica revealed that she had written from the age of 12 years and this habit made her able to divide the time between writing novels and studying.

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Pages: 217 pages
Genres: Science Fiction, Utopian and dystopian fiction, Young adult fiction.

This novel is set in the future in Chicago, telling stories about humans separated based on their characteristics into 5 different factions. There is Abgenation that adheres to selfishness, Erudite who adheres to knowledge, Candor who adheres to honesty, Amity who embraces peace, and Dauntless who embraces courage. All five live in harmony and each faction has a specific role in community life.

Beatrice Prior and her family are Abnegation, whose culture requires them to act as selfishly as possible, for example by always yielding to others, wearing gray clothes so as not to attract attention and always ready to help and serve others. These unselfish attitudes make Abnegation appointed by another faction to hold government - the theory is that government must be held by people who always work based on public interests and not to fulfill personal ambitions.

This story began when Beatrice Prior, who was 16 years old, had to take part in a faction selection ceremony that must be passed when the person's age has reached 16 years. In the selection test conducted the day before the ceremony, Beatrice's test results show that she not only has one characteristic that stands out, but has three: Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite. People who are suitable in more than one faction are called Divergents. The existence of a Divergent is very rare and Beatrice is warned not to share the results of her tests with anyone because being a Divergent is very dangerous.

At the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice decided to leave her family and join Dauntless, while her older brother, Caleb, decided to become Erudite, Abnegation's main enemy. Arriving at Dauntless, Beatrice changed her name to Tris. She had to pass a terrible initiation period with 19 other people to become the top 10 so that she could be accepted as a member of Dauntless. She gets a mysterious instructor, a man named Four.

Almost all of this book tells of the initiation process that Tris and her friends went through. From learning to fight with bare hands, throwing knives, through fear simulation, which is a simulation that tests members' resilience to their biggest fears. Meanwhile, the world outside Dauntless began to stir when the Erudite faction harassed the Abnegation faction and devised a very evil thing. This is what began to affect the conditions in Dauntless and Tris's view of herself and her world.

As a science fiction novel, Divergent has been able to present a distinctive feel of sci-fi with research and various high-tech serums. Characteristics of the characters in this novel are quite realistic. By using the perspective of the first person, this novel is also able to express the emotions of the main character (Tris) well. In addition, the Divergent also carries the theme of seeking self-esteem that is suitable for today's teenagers.
